Shifts Before the Fair (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, May 1 – 3)

Vendor Field Set-Up
(Wednesday, Thursday & Friday shifts)

Layout and number vendor booths. Place direction signs on blacktop and install temporary security fencing. This job requires the ability to walk over uneven terrain, stand for long periods & kneel or bend over to measure & place markers.


Parking Setup
(Thursday & Friday shifts)

Create the lanes for traffic entering the Fairgrounds from the Blue and Yellow gates. This job requires the ability to stand & walk over uneven terrain.


Exhibit Center Setup
(Thursday & Friday shifts)

Setup and help arrange for the various exhibits in the 4-H Building.


Potting Station Setup
(Thursday & Friday shifts)

Set up the tables for displaying pots and potting plants. Unwrap and display the pots for sale. This job requires the ability to lift pots and bags of soil.


Vendor Yellow Gate Monitors
(Friday shifts)

Volunteers needed at the Yellow Gate to welcome vendors as they arrive. Volunteers will be wearing the SGF vests, so they are visible to the vendors. Chairs will be provided. Bring water, hot beverages if desired, snacks, and dress in layers. Training will be provided by the vendor sales committee chair upon the volunteer’s arrival. Volunteers will be provided with the vendor sales committee chair’s cell phone number.


Coffee Setup
(Friday shifts)

Make and serve coffee to volunteers at the Fair for the setup of various areas. 


Raffle Set-Up 
(Friday shifts)

Set-up raffle area & stock with donations.


Plant/Hanging Plant Check Set-Up 
(Friday shifts)

Set up holding area for plant check and hanging baskets. Organize boxes. Prefer some men to help with heavy overhead lifting.


New Plant Introductions 
(Friday shifts)

Set up the display area for the grower-donated plants.

Shifts During the Fair (Saturday & Sunday, May 4 & 5)

Children’s Activities
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Provide children attending the Spring Garden Fair with engaging hands-on, educational/art activities that they can take home and enjoy. Examples include planting seeds, exploring insects in soil and building a watering station for birds and insects.


Clinic / Ask a Master Gardener™
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Certified Master Gardener™ volunteers answer gardening questions for clients in an OSU Master Gardener™ clinic.


Hospitality
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Greet customers as they enter the Fair, hand out info and answer questions. Count and record each arrival. Thank customers for coming, we’ll see you next year!


New Plant Introductions
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Set up new grower-donated plants for the “Silent Auction” in the morning, share new plant info with bidders during the day and help close down the auction in the afternoon. 


Parking
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Attend the gate entrance to the Master Gardener Parking area on N. Pine Street.


Plant Check
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Work with customers checking plants. Write receipts, place plants in holding area and retrieve plants for customers upon leaving. Note: This job requires the ability to lift heavy flats of plants, walk over uneven terrain and some extended standing. Please wear appropriate footgear for walking on the loose surface of the horse arena that houses Plant Check.


Potting Station
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Work with customers to choose pots for purchase, and fill those with free soil and the plants they have already purchased. This job requires the ability to lift pots and bags of soil, and to be attentive to the ideas of the customers.


Raffle
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

  • Raffle Prize Pickup – Verify a winning ticket when presented and picking up the next prize in line to hand to the winner. Requires smiling, standing and maybe some lifting.  
  • Raffle Ticket Sales – Sell tickets at the sales tables. It is a sitting position but requires quick actions when large number of tickets are purchased.

Soil Testing
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Learn how to calibrate & operate pH testing instruments. Prepare and analyze soil samples, explain results to customers. Please bring your own soil samples as well.


Vendor & Master Gardener Snack Area
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Monitor entry into Horning Hall set up just for the vendors and volunteers. Help put out snacks and drinks.


Vendor Setup
(Saturday shifts)

Volunteers to provide help to vendors wherever needed as they set up their booths.


Vendor Snack Wagons
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Stock the two red wagons with snacks, treats, and water to deliver to vendors on the field.


Volunteer Floater
(Saturday & Sunday shifts)

Be ready to fill in for any volunteer vacancies that occur due to illness or other reasons.

Shifts After the Fair (Sunday afternoon, May 5)

  • Exhibit Hall break down
  • Fair break down
  • Potting Station take down
  • Signage take down
  • Put the Exhibit Hall back to its original configuration
  • Pick up all vendor booth number stakes/flags
  • Pack up leftover pots and soil
  • Take down miscellaneous signs on the grounds
